A look towards the future, a sort of ‘Design after Design’ that is changing course.

This new event, organised in partnership with the Mercatino del Gusto – now in its 25th edition – is a project looking to the future in terms of both food culture and design.

On display are eight dining table designs created by eight design studios, designers and architects, each with a different theme and made possible not only with the support of well-known brands but also through the vision of emerging talents, start-ups and self-produced designs.

“The Table Changes Course” is a contemporary dining table that curators Cintya Concari and Roberto Marcatti have sought to envisage through an exhibition showcasing the best of future design dedicated to the world of dining as it will be, set against the backdrop of the Museum of Palaeontology and Palaeobotany in Maglie (LE), which serves as a constant reminder of our evolution.

This year’s event, therefore, aims to be less celebratory than previous editions, which explored the world of dining through the creativity of Gio Ponti and Tobia Scarpa – ‘giants’ of architecture and design. Today, given the constantly shifting social, economic, religious and cultural landscape, the curators have chosen to take a bold approach and explore food culture and design culture by contextualising them in relation to places and people, and to what might become a new way of eating and using the domestic dining table in a rapidly changing world.
The concept for the 2024 edition will therefore be to explore the future ‘domestic dining table’, which will vary according to the people, places and objects involved.

The exhibition features installations exploring the many everyday uses of the table, aiming to portray – in the most contemporary and authentic way, whilst also being the most functional in the face of changing times – both the act of eating and the world of design that surrounds it, starting with all those products that bring the conviviality of food into a new domestic setting.

The aim and challenge of the exhibition “La tavola cambia rotta” is therefore an invitation and an inspiration to think outside the box, to find one’s bearings in the crowded design landscape that surrounds us every day and to look ‘beyond’, sharing the new projects on display with their practical, functional, aesthetic and technological solutions for our homes, the spaces in which we live, architecture, the urban landscape and mobility.

Above all, however, the exhibition’s message presents a range of choices that celebrate all aspects of diversity and inclusivity, working together to convey the same ethical, social and sustainable message, whilst also embodying beauty and ease of use.
And so, once again, it prompts us to reflect on how design has become global, how it has reshaped – and continues to reshape – objects and subjects towards an unstoppable transformation of every aspect of our daily lives, whilst remaining mindful of the greatest challenge: to offer contemporary solutions even for the ‘extraordinary’, born of the same research, attention to detail, technology and beauty that we apply to ‘ordinary’ projects.
